THE SOUTHEAST ASIA GLOBE

Picture
The Southeast Asia Globe is a regional, independent media organization with reporters and editors across the region. Based in Phnom Penh, The Globe is considered one of the most trusted newsrooms in Cambodia. I joined as a reporting intern, before transitioning to a staff reporter. In this new role, I cover news and the environment.

On the environmental beat, I've been reporting on the most pressing
issues in Cambodia and across Southeast Asia, such as illegal logging, coastal conditions, renewable energy, aquaculture and biodiversity. Alongside my writing, I produce photos and videos as part of a newsroom-wide effort to improve The Globe's multimedia storytelling.

Record-low water flows alter Mekong fisheries, farmland
A light beam illuminated the tear stretching across the bag net. Embers from the cigarette pursed between Sak Sao’s lips crumble onto his pant leg, his hands too busy stitching the rip to brush them off. In minutes the net was back in the river, as Sao worked around the clock to make up for another year of low catches.

Endangered 'barking deer' sighting fuels calls for conservation
The spots on the back of the large-antlered muntjac may have given it away as a fawn, but the photo of the deer suckling from its mother served as confirmation. Photographs of the moment are the first known images of a large-antlered muntjac fawn in Cambodia.

The legacy of Cambodia's 'Golden Voice' takes on a new form
Eyes seemed to look over Ros Saboeun’s shoulder as she flipped through an album of family photos. Her eyes glistened as each memory opened and closed. The sunlight reflecting off the wall of pictures behind Saboeun appeared to make the still stares glimmer as well.

Loss of tourism dollars threaten traditional Cambodian arts
Before the pandemic, the Kingdom welcomed millions of guests each year and the tourism dollars funded the cultural sector of the industry, which over the last two years has seen artists and organizations struggle to preserve ancient, traditional arts.

16 years on, Danish band still rocks Cambodia's airwaves
In 2005, Michael Learns to Rock became the first international band to perform in Cambodia since the Khmer Rouge was removed from power. While younger listeners may not as easily recognize the melodies, the band still holds a firm grasp on the hearts of a generation of Cambodians who came of age during the turn of the century.
